How long does it take to season firewood? Follow

There are many views on this. The amount of water content in wood varies a great deal and this is really what you are dealing with, and trying to reduce, when you season your logs.

For example, Ash frequently contains less than 30% water and sap compared to higher percentages in other wood types.

Most wood is seasoned enough to burn eight months to a year, but longer is nearly always better.
Softwoods like fir or pine can often be dry enough in under year whereas hardwoods like Oak will often longer to season properly.

As a general rule, obvious though it may seem, different species of wood take different lengths of time to dry. It is safe to say that as a rule, hardwoods longer to dry than softwoods.
