An aerator’s main job is to dig right in to the soil of the lawn and allow air in to engender good root growth and enhance drainage, delivering a lush, green and healthy lawn. (See image below)

Aerators tend to be broken down into two types.
- Hollow Tine Aerators
- Spiked aerators.
Within these categories there are
- Walk Behind Aerators
- Tow Behind Aerators
Walk behind aerators still take a considerable physical effort, and it is possible to carry out this task with a fork, but it is very laborious and a proper, dedicated manual, mechanical or powered aerator will do a faster, easier and more efficient job.
This job is usually carried out between the months of March and November.
