Though some woods can be burned green (unseasoned) air-drying wood before splitting seasons the wood and makes logs easier to split.
Seasoning is essential for some woods and is very helpful if you have the time and space.   
The need for seasoning is often due to the natural water content in the wood. Seasoned wood gives off more heat than unseasoned wood by up to 44%.
